LAW41630 Professional Diploma in Professional Regulation

Academic Year 2022/2023

The programme will provide participants with a detailed knowledge of the aims of professional regulation and the functions of a regulator. Participants will explore some of the distinctive ethical problems faced by professionals, and will focus in detail on the fitness to practise process including the grounds for making a complaint, interim suspensions, mediation, conducting disciplinary hearings and considerations in imposing sanctions. Participants will consider the practical consequences of the obligation to apply fair procedures and High Court oversight of regulatory decisions.

Learning Outcomes:

The programme will develop participants' understanding both of the historical development of professional regulation and its current themes and perspectives. Participants will be able to demonstrate specialised knowledge and understanding of the law and practice of professional regulation and to consider common and current issues at the forefront of the field. Participants will be able to apply their knowledge, understanding and abilities in diverse environments that draw on their professional experience. Participants will also develop their appreciation of the ethical dimension to professional behaviour.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The teaching and learning approaches used in the course are lectures and student presentations. The student presentations are a group activity - the presentation on an individual topic is made by a group of students, typically three.
