Victims have become increasingly salient in academic, political and media discourse, reflecting a growing awareness of the need to support, inform and protect people who have suffered harm arising from a criminal offence. In recent years, initiatives designed to assist victims and help them to participate more fully in the criminal justice process have been introduced in many jurisdictions, including Ireland. This module explores what is known about victims of crime and their experiences of the criminal justice process.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

• Demonstrate a nuanced understanding of key theoretical, methodological and conceptual issues in victimisation research

• Critically examine key debates and controversies concerning the victim’s role in the criminal justice process

• Evaluate recent legal, policy and practice developments

• Demonstrate awareness of issues related to specific victim groups, particularly victims of sexual violence and victims labelled as 'vulnerable'
