This module explores key theories of crime, including biological, psychological and sociological explanations of criminal behaviour. Students are encouraged to critically examine both classic and recent criminological theories, including their origins, principal ideas, strengths and limitations, and practical applications.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the main tenets of key criminological theories
2. critically reflect on the strengths and limitations of each perspective
3. critically evaluate competing perspectives on criminal behaviour
4. exhibit knowledge of the history and origins of theoretical perspectives on crime
5. assess the criminal justice applications of the theories
