Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students will have:
 acquired and demonstrated an understanding of the formal and substantive legal requirements for a valid and enforceable arbitrator’s award
 acquired and demonstrated a knowledge of drafting skills and techniques required of arbitrators and have practiced using them in a variety of exercises
 demonstrated an ability to write, from given fact scenarios, a valid and enforceable arbitrator’s reasoned award and have written and been assessed on such an award.
 Have covered the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Module 4 “Award Writing” syllabus.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:

Significant task based module - following classes on the theory, practice and techniques of award writing students engage in a series of off-site award writing exercises which are submitted for detailed individual formative assessment and comprehensive feedback before a final submission of a major reasoned arbitral award on a substantial problem scenario for formal assessment.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Detailed comprehensive individual feedback will be supplied on each award submitted in the Unreasoned Award exercise and the Reasoned Award exercise before final submission of a comprehensive reasoned award for summative assessment. Group feedback may also be supplied post-assessment online and in accordance with School of Law policy, and individual students may apply for personal feedback on how they stand relative to the group feedback.
