This module is designed to look at the financial law of the European Union.

The law of the eurozone is obviously a key element. The Economic and Monetary Union has in recent years become a veritable institutional and legal construction site. In this course, the evolution of EMU is traced and the institutional structure of EMU looked at, in particular the ESCB and the ECB. The impact of the 2008 crisis is also examined.

This course will also spend some time looking at the European Banking Union, including the law of the Single Supervisory Mechanism and the Single Resolution Mechanism.

Moreover, it is intended to spend some time looking at financial regulation and supervision, in the wake of the recent financial and sovereign debt crisis.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this course, students should have acquired an understanding of the financial law of the European Union, ranging from the law and institutions of economic and monetary union to the law of the European Banking Union to the post-crisis regime in the field of financial regulation and supervision.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The key teaching and learning approaches used in the module include active/task-based learning usually in the form of student presentations on a cutting-edge article in the area of financial law of the European Union which is summatively assessed and which is delivered in front of the class; in addition to which there is reflective learning which is provided for by means of students being asked to write an essay on a (named) topic of current concern in the field, and which is also summatively assessed.

Learning Recommendations:

Advisable to have studied European Union law (covering constitutional and internal market aspects) (For UCD students, this means LAW20330 EU Constitutional Law and LAW20340 EU Economic Law )
