This module explores the politics of law and order, the history of coercive confinement, the role of the prison in society, and approaches to penal reform. A wide range of source material is used including official statistics, policy papers, and academic studies.

Learning Outcomes:

On completing this module it is expected that students will be able to:

Analyse how penal policy has developed over the past thirty years.
Debate key challenges facing prison systems.
Explore different conceptions of punitiveness.
