This five credit module introduces candidates to the foundations of the Irish law of property. The module considers how legal systems approach the regulation of property ownership and benefits; the history of the development of real property law in Ireland, including the role played by equity; freehold and leasehold estates, the enfranchisement of leaseholds, trusts of lands of and law of adverse possession.

The course is delivered by means of a combination of weekly lectures and fortnightly tutorials. Candidates must complete specific reading prior to lectures and tutorials in order for them to engage fully with this course. There are four tutorials as part of this course. Tutorials are not a substitute for lectures; rather the tutorial is guided by a tutor whose primary role is to ensure full participation by all candidates in the tutorial group.

The module is assessed by terminal examination.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module is delivered via lectures and tutorials.

Lectures only ever serve as an introduction to a particular topic. Students are required to conduct extensive reading both prior to and after a lecture on the prescribed topics. Students are provided with reading lists and other learning materials.

Tutorials are an extremely important way of working out problems and discussing the concepts considered in class more critically.
Students are expected to attend all tutorials, to be fully prepared and to actively participate.

Students on this module are expected to have read and understood the UCD Academic Integrity Policy and the School Protocol on Academic Integrity. Students must ensure that they comply with all requirements laid down therein and avoid academic misconduct. Students are not permitted to use generative artificial intelligence, or other machine learning technology, in their learning on this module. Because this module is assessed by an unseen, invigilated examination, no formal citation methodology is prescribed.
