LAW00030 Introduction to Law in Ireland

This module is aimed at students who wish to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of how the Irish legal system operates within its societal context. The law module seeks to provide students with confidence and become active, autonomous learners who are conscious of the social, cultural and political dimension of the law. It also seeks to provide a solid pathway for those students interested in pursuing further studies in law.
The module will introduce the main sources of law including the common law, legislation, the Irish Constitution and the law of the European Union. It will also examine the role of the major actors in the Irish legal system such as solicitors, barristers and the judiciary. Finally, the module will examine core concepts that lie at the heart of the Irish legal system such as the rule of law and human rights.

Learning Outcomes:

Learning Outcomes: on completion of this modules students should be able to:
1. Understand and analyse the sources of law in the Irish legal system;
2. Understand the hierarchy of these sources of law;
3. Outline and assess how law is created and how it operates in select areas, in particular with respect to the Constitution, legislation and common law;
4. Evaluate and reflect on the role of judges, barristers and solicitors in the Irish legal system;
5. Communicate effectively the role of law in modern society;
