In this module students will read selected passages from Sallust's Bellum Catilinae in the original Latin. The work preserves Sallust’s account of the famous Catilinarian conspiracy of 63 BC. Students will be invited to assess the literary qualities of the work and to evaluate it as a historical source in the context of Late Roman Republican culture. Study of Sallust’s rhetorical style and use of language will provide opportunities for widening and reinforcing skills in translating Latin.

The prescribed edition is the following: Ramsey, J. T. (ed.) 2007. Sallust's Bellum Catilinae, 2nd Edition. Oxford University Press.
This edition is available to access for free, online through the UCD e-library. < https://go.exlibris.link/tQGqp2bn >

PLEASE NOTE that the School of Classics reserves the right to withdraw modules in the period up to and including the first week of the teaching trimester.
