LAT30110 Republic to Empire: Poetry of the Civil Wars

Academic Year 2022/2023

In this module we will read a selection of Virgil's Eclogues in the original Latin. In addition, we will study the historical context of the period of the Civil Wars, explore pastoral poetry as a way of writing, and consider the place of this literary genre in Roman culture. Students will also be required to read a selection of Horace's Odes privately in order to expand their knowledge of Latin authors and styles. PLEASE NOTE that the School of Classics reserves the right to cancel modules up to and including the first week of the teaching semester.
