LAT20140 Intermediate Latin

This module constitutes a final stage of introduction to the Latin language within the context of ancient Roman culture. Students will revise grammatical forms and syntax and will gradually be introduced to more complex constructions, developing their reading skills through grammatical and comprehension exercises and through the translation of passages of unadapted Latin from a range of Roman writers. In tutorials students will practise translating longer sections from original authors, using the transitional reader Latin via Ovid Chapters XXXI-XL, developing their reading skills through the translation of passages of unadapted Latin drawn from a range of key Roman writers (e.g. Cicero, Ovid and Livy). By the end of the module students will have acquired an extensive vocabulary and familiarity with all of the more complex syntactical structures of Classical Latin. They will also be able to translate passages of unadapted Latin (both seen and unseen), and have developed a greater fluency in translation.

Learning Outcomes:

* manage an extensive Latin vocabulary;
* use their knowledge of vocabulary;
* grammar and syntax to translate prepared and unprepared passages of moderate difficulty from key Latin authors;
* translate with greater fluency;
* comment on the wider cultural background to the texts;
* comment on the literary qualities of the texts they have studied.

Indicative Module Content:

The classes will focus primarily on translation of the passages in "Latin Via Ovid" Chapters XXXI-XL and learning the grammar, syntax and use of language laid out in each chapter. Towards the end of the semester, time permitting, students will read selected passages from Latin prose authors.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The classes will focus on translation of passages of seen and unseen Latin, and on analysis of Latin grammar, syntax and use of language.

In the Autumn 2020/21 trimester module delivery is blended, but it would be possible to complete the module entirely online,
