LARC30150 Landscape Studio 3 A

Academic Year 2021/2022

The module encourages an approach to construction detailing for designed landscape which is integrated with the creative design process and based on a review and processing of physical materials in the workshop and studio, using the tools and equipment available. Drawing exercises focus on exploration of materials, setting out and construction detailing. The emphasis is on integration of function, form, making and materials. Students are expected to state their intentions, explore the physical attributes of selected materials, to demonstrate the coherence of their proposals, and (subject to conditions, or restrictions) construct 1:1 scale interventions.

Work stages may include both group and individual work. A joint project of a duration of approximately two weeks may be offered with students of civil/structural engineering. Interim submission requirements assist the students in planning their work, but students are expected to work in an increasingly independent fashion in this studio, to question, test and develop their own work using appropriate representational means.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate (i) ability to develop and critique projects in an individual and group setting (ii) ability to analyse and represent site context (iii) understanding of the influence of site constraints on design development (iv) ability to make and represent appropriate detailed design interventions in a given context (v) understanding of issues concerning appropriate choice and use of materials (vi) ability to research appropriate subject matter and physical materials relatively independently and to use such research in support of design (vii) improved familiarity with the physical attributes of materials and ways in which multiple materials can be fixed together at 1:1 scale (viii) ability to work and think independently, and to make choices when confronted with conflicting information or advice.

• Group/class feedback, post-assessment

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

The module is studio and workshop based and involves drawing, model making, processing of sample materials and sometimes construction of sample materials outdoors on campus, therefore it is subdivided into several 'work stages' across the semester. These are assessed on the due date and feedback is given verbally within several days or the following teaching date. Additionally, a joint, group activity may be included with engineering students, during a period of approximately two weeks. This activity is assessed separately by teaching staff from landscape architecture and engineering.
