LARC30120 Landscape Studio 3B

LARC 30120 Studio 3B is one of three options available to students on the B.Sc. Landscape Architecture programme in Stage three spring trimester. The other options are LARC30220 long internship, or LARC30230 short internship coupled with a trmester learning abroad.
LARC 30120 Studio 3B will focus on state of the art professional landscape architecture in Europe and involves the participation in international student competition. The brief will be agreed by tutoring staff and the student cohort at the start of the trimester.

This module builds on the earlier studio modules by introducing students to projects of a larger physical scale and addressing some of the contemporary challenges facing those involved in landscape architecture.
Participants will carry out research on landscape architectural pratice in various European countries, precedent studies, site survey including an optional study trip to the site(s) of the competiton to inform their proposal. The critical analysis of all competition entries and a public presentation of their findings will conclude this studio module.
Studio 3B involves both individual research and analysis and design in small groups up to a maximum of 4 students.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate ability to
(i) research, survey, analyse and critique European landscape architectural practice either individually or in a group
(ii) analyse, discuss and respond to some of the relevant issues concerning the site of the student competition
(iii) make appropriate and well considered design interventions in a specified context
(iv) develop and critique projects individually and in a class setting, with reference to precedents
(v) use various representational skills as appropriate to the stage of the project
(vi) present and discuss work coherently.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This is a design studio where students carry out self-directed and studio-based learning. It is supported by regular tutorials and occasional lectures by staff. Students are required to develop their design work and to make presentations in the studio and to a wider public. The participation in an internationa student competition and the critical analysis of the submitted proposals will allow students to develop their professional skills in critical analysis, landscape architectural design and graphic communication.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Each submission will be made by the student to staff and other students taking part in the module as part of studio-based 'crits'. The assessment in crits is a form of immediate feedback. Crits are timetabled for each submission stage. Staff will assess and grade the work presented at the crit and give verbal feedback and grades to the student afterwards on a group or individual basis. Feedback will be oral written feed back can be requested by the group / the indivdual student. Peer assessmet will be carried out after group projects, self-assessment after the final submission of the competition The assessment stages will be: - 2 stages of research - 3 stages of design development - Final portfolio submission: summary of module work with graphics and supporting texts
