In this module, participants critically examine key principles of EAP and approaches to teaching it. They will become familiar with BALEAP’s TEAP Framework as they explore the roles of constructivism and connectivism in TEAP theory. They will develop awareness in analysing student needs at HE institutions and will examine student perceptions of how EAP relates to their academic development. They will then address best practice in teaching the four skills, with a particular focus on task-based approaches. Participants will also consider how to effectively exploit and adapt authentic materials for EAP and investigate the relationship between materials selection and lesson planning. A significant focus will be on how to nurture learner autonomy in EAP learners. The module will also address blended and online approaches to teaching EAP.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module, students will have:
• explored the role of constructivism and connectivism in TEAP theory
• examined task-based approaches to teaching the four skills in the EAP context
• reflected on best practice in designing curricula and planning courses in EAP
• considered how to effectively exploit and adapt authentic materials for EAP
• interrogated learner needs and approaches to developing learner autonomy
• developed ideas on how to exploit online and blended learning in EAP
