This module is designed for international students who have a B2 level of English and wish to improve their English for academic and professional development. Students will improve their understanding of a wide range of demanding native speaker usage and be able to recognise implicit meaning in a wide range of speech acts. Students will have the opportunity to develop their oral proficiency through presentations on complex topics and through participation in fluent and spontaneous speech. Students will learn to use English flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes and write clear, well-structured, detailed texts on complex subjects. Aspects of Irish history, politics and culture will be introduced through written and spoken texts and classroom discussions.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Students who achieve at least a B grade in this module should be able to:

• give a detailed presentation on a complex subject (spoken production)
• discuss a detailed subject in a fluent manner (spoken interaction)
• understand nuance in a wide range of spoken texts (listening)
• recognise implicit meaning in complex texts (reading)
• write detailed texts on complex subjects (writing)

Students who achieve at least a B grade at the end of this module are deemed to have reached Level C1.1 of the Common European Framework

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module involves an interactive small group class using pair work and task-based activities. Students prepare short presentations and short writing assignments.
