This module is designed for students who already have an upper intermediate level of Spanish. Its aim is to develop communicative competence to a higher level of proficiency and accuracy and to deepen insight into Spanish life and culture. While the focus will be on competence in the language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, there will be a particular emphasis on oral communication and extending vocabulary. The course will be based on a wide range of intercultural themes to prepare students to participate more actively in university, work and social contexts in Spanish-speaking countries. This module will be delivered via small group teaching with classes having a maximum of 18 students. Students will also have access to extra resources and materials via the Virtual Learning Environment, Brightspace.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
• give a clear, well-structured presentation on a chosen theme (spoken production)
• converse fluently and accurately on a wide range of topics (spoken interaction)
• understand a wide range of spoken materials including non-standard usage (listening)
• understand texts with reference to university-related contexts (reading)
• write texts with clarity and precision on a wide range of subjects (writing)
• show progress in developing an awareness of and sensitivity to a foreign culture


Students who achieve at least a B grade at the end of this module are deemed to have reached Level B1.2/ B2.1 of the Common European Framework

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module involves an interactive small group class using pair work and task-based activities. Students prepare short presentations and short writing assignments.
