This module is for students who have no previous knowledge of Irish Sign Language (ISL). The aim is for students to develop a basic knowledge of signs so that they are able to participate in simple everyday communicative situations. ISL may be of particular value to students seeking a career in health or education or for those who have contact with deaf people through work, friends or family. It may also be of intrinsic interest to linguists. The opportunity to become aware of the values, beliefs, attitudes and traditions of cultures associated with ISL will be facilitated in the topics and learning materials in this module. Irish Sign Language (ISL) is the language used by the Irish deaf community in everyday communication. ISL has its own grammar rules and linguistic features which are separate and distinct from spoken English. It is a visual spatial language and does not rely on sound. ISL has been in existence for centuries and has developed and changed through time and with the development of new technologies.
This module will be delivered via small group teaching with classes having a maximum of 18 students.
Note: This module does not lead to a formal vocational qualification. Students who successfully complete this course may register with the Irish Deaf Society to take further courses.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
• be able to understand short, simple messages in ISL in routine situations
• be able to use a series of phrases in ISL related to information about oneself, family, occupation, shopping, etc.
• demonstrate an ability to manage short social conversations
• be aware of current issues related to the deaf community

Students who achieve at least a B grade at the end of this module are deemed to have reached Level A1.1 of the Common European Framework
