This module is designed to introduce students to the reading and writing skills required for study at graduate level in an English-medium higher education environment.

The reading classes introduce students to different reading strategies and skills such as note-taking, summarising, synthesizing and critically evaluating information from academic sources. The writing classes are designed to take students through the different stages involved in the academic writing process and help them develop their academic writing skills incrementally from sentences, to paragraph structure, to different types of essays and timed writing tasks. Students will engage in regular peer and self-review of academic writing activities and learn how to use formative feedback to revise and improve academic assignments. They will also expand the range and improve the accuracy of lexis and grammatical structures they use in written texts. Achieving academic integrity through sound academic writing, avoiding plagiarism, and appropriate referencing and citation is an integral part of the writing classes.

The module is delivered via small group, face-to-face teaching. Additional learning materials, online resources and activities are provided via Brightspace to facilitate guided independent study and group work.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

- employ academic reading skills and strategies
- make effective notes on an academic text and use notes to summarise texts
- demonstrate an understanding of the writing process (planning, drafting, editing/proofreading) and the writing product (structure, academic language, writing conventions)
- produce different types of written academic texts (e.g. summaries, argumentative essays, cause-effect, problem-solution) using appropriate language
- respect academic integrity by avoiding plagiarism and using appropriate referencing and citation

Indicative Module Content:

Students will be exposed to a wide range of topics of general academic and social interest by critically engaging with academic texts and producing different types of essays.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module is delivered via small group, face-to-face teaching.
Classes are both teacher and student-led depending on the intended learning objectives of sessions.
Students are expected to work collaboratively (in small writing groups) and engage in peer review activities and various independent study tasks throughout the course.
