Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module, students should have a comprehensive understanding of
research in media and communications, including literature review, research design, data
collection, and analysis. They should also have the ability to write a clear, concise, and
well-structured dissertation that makes a contribution to the field. They should achieve
these learning outcomes by carrying out cogent, critical, and independent research and will
be able to demonstrate the following:
• Identify a specific research problem
• Develop research questions and hypotheses
• Devise a research design for answering specific research questions
• Identify, retrieve, and evaluate research findings in the published literature
• Carry out a comprehensive literature review on the topic
• Engage with relevant work using a bibliographic style (e.g., APA 7h)
• Design a research project with justification for methodology/approach
• Create a realistic timeline for their research project
• Collect, curate, and manage research data
• Critically discuss the findings of the thesis work
• Write, edit, structure, and proof-read a thesis
