IS40920 Digital Policy Issues & Trends

With support from Microsoft Ireland, UCD’s School of Information and Communication studies is establishing a suite of Digital Policy Programmes with the goal of building digital policy training and capacity in Ireland and Europe. The Professional Certificate will build on existing expertise and infrastructure across the University to address the increased demand for digital policy knowledge and skills among professionals working in industry and the public sector. This Professional Certificate in Digital Policy is a one-week intensive introduction to digital policy that will be aimed at individuals already working in the private sector, academia, and the public sector who want an introduction to key issues in digital policy. While there are modules in numerous universities that would be of interest, to date there are no formal training options that are offered in a format that would be suitable for working professionals. There will be academic lectures, presentations from industry, and hands-on activities.

Learning Outcomes:

- Be familiar with the literatures and current debates on digital policy
- Understand and apply the policy making and evaluation processes
- Apply knowledge of theoretical and empirical concepts to contemporary issues in digital policy

Indicative Module Content:

Drawing on the state of the art in social science, policy analysis, law, ethics, and design, this module will provide a
multidisciplinary introduction to current challenges, debates, and approaches to designing,
implementing, and developing policy for different organisational and technological contexts. Topics will include the policy process, current trends and issues in policy making, industry and academic perspectives, and designing ethical policy. Module will include lectures, group discussions, and hands-on activities.
