This module introduces fundamental concepts and practices of bibliographic access and control and metadata, which involves creating, maintaining, and evaluating metadata records and applying subject headings and classification systems. Students will be introduced to cataloguing principles, rules, and standards, including, but not limited to, AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, second edition), RDA (Resource Description and Access), MARC21 Format for Bibliographic Data, Dublin Core, and other metadata standards, as well as Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Classification, and Library of Congress Subject Headings. All students will be encouraged to explore the full field of information organization, particularly with regard to the challenging convergence of metadata from different information communities.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to
(a) Apply the basic principles of cataloguing/metadata;
(b) Apply the basic principles of subject representation;
(c) Create bibliographic records using AACR2/RDA, MARC21, and DDC;
(d) Evaluate bibliographic records; and
(e) Critically assess metadata standards and best practices.
