This module introduces students to the World Wide Web. It examines how the basic tenets of markup language theory have influenced the development of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). The main focus of this module is the practical creation of web pages using HTML5 and CSS. The ability to create web pages is an essential skill for all graduates, particularly information professionals. The module workload will include one e-class a week, to be completed in the student's own time and submitted via Brightspace, plus one lecture per week. Assessment will include these classes plus a 2 hour exam.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to: Create web pages that are technically accurate, standards-oriented, future-proof and appropriate for their intended purpose. Be able to manipulate HTML code directly. Apply the tenets of markup language theory to web page development. Demonstrate how the World Wide Web and HTML have emerged, how they function and how they are evolving.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
1 lecture per week.
1 remote class weekly to be completed and submitted via Brightspace.
In Weeks 2 and 3, two optional computer lab sessions, to help you to get started on the practical aspects of the module.
2 hour exam at end of trimester.

The use of WYSIWYG HTML editors or generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, is prohibited (ie constitutes Student Academic Misconduct) in the production of assessments for this module.
