This module introduces students to the World Wide Web. It examines how the basic tenets of markup language theory have influenced the development of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). The main focus of this module is the practical creation of web pages using HTML5 and CSS. The ability to create web pages is an essential skill for all graduates, particularly information professionals. The module workload will include one e-class a week, to be completed in the student's own time and submitted via Brightspace, plus one lecture per week.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to: Create web pages that are technically accurate, standards-oriented, future-proof and appropriate for their intended purpose. Be able to manipulate HTML code directly. Apply the tenets of markup language theory to web page development. Demonstrate how the World Wide Web and HTML have emerged, how they function and how they are evolving.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
1 lecture per week.
1 remote class to be completed and submitted via Brightspace.
In Weeks 2 and 3, two optional computer lab sessions, to help you to get started on the practical aspects of the module.
Practical project (creation of a website) due final week of trimester.
Exam at end of trimester.
