This interdisciplinary course will focus on place, people and identity in Ireland, through its history, literature and film. The module will cover representations from the late nineteenth century to the present. The growth of distinctive urban cultures and rural cultures, and their role in the shaping of identity debates within Ireland, will be of particular importance. The course will also examine emigration and the diaspora (specifically in the US), and the ways in which identity structures are effected and affected by migration, displacement, and exile.

*Students will need a laptop and WiFi connection to participate fully in this module.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Understanding of key concepts in the analysis of the role of place in social and cultural identity2. Ability to apply these concepts 3. Ability to identify research sources 4. Development of students' ability to synthesise, analyse and communicate the results of their reading and study
