This module deals with customs and observances relating to particular time-periods and festivals in Irish tradition, and examines the ways in which these occasions are collectively marked in popular culture, in the past and in the present. Calendar custom encompasses many aspects of popular tradition, including ritual, belief, performance and narrative. The morphology of calendar custom will be explored and discussed, and students will be able to draw on their own experience as part of their studies. The 'subaltern' nature of certain aspects of calendar custom, and the ways in which calendar-related practices function at collective and individual levels, are addressed. Attention will also be paid to the vibrancy attaching to many calendar observances, and to the way in which some occasions have adapted with great adeptness to the ideas and requirements of contemporary society.

Teaching in the module is carried out in lectures. It is geared towards the promotion of a spirit of enquiry among students and towards encouraging them to develop a reflective approach to their studies.

We are hoping that teaching will be carried out face-to-face in the academic year 2021/22. Students should note that this situation may change depending on public health restrictions, however.

Assessment will take the form of an in-term assignment and an end-of-term assignment.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module, students should be able to:

1. Give an account of calendar custom and festival practice in Ireland, with reference to the wider European context.
2. Discuss relevant analytical work on the nature and function of calendar custom.
3. Identify individual strands and influences in the development of contemporary calendar custom.
4. Display an understanding of the theoretical issues involved.
5.Relate the study of calendar custom in a meaningful and productive manner to other areas of study and to life experience as a whole.
6. Demonstrate the requisite knowledge, level of skill and expertise to progress in a confident manner with their own research in this area.
7. Display an awareness of the many levels on which calendar custom can be read and interpreted.
8. Evaluate approaches to the study of calendar custom in the past and in the present.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
