IA40720 Sustainability: Human Drivers of Innovation

Academic Year 2023/2024

In this module participants gain a background in the human drivers of change related to sustainability. The major tools of governance (markets, governments and communities) are explored to understand how various approaches support behavioural change including: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Environment Social and Governance (ESG) reporting requirements, Consumer demands (both product and DEI related), EU Carbon & Reporting Requirements, and Ireland’s Climate Action Plan. The knowledge is scafolded to support student experential learning through application of concepts in various exercises including group presentations and discussions. The final assignment students develop a real sustainability report. Students will use design thinking to structure and identify ways to approach and realise sustainability reports to support meeting key stakeholder needs and behavior change in an organisation.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module participants will:

•develop their ability effectively applying the five stages of the Design Thinking Process
•be able to design and implement appropriate approaches for data collection related to Human Drivers of Sustainability from multiple and diverse sources.
•develop a basis to analyse and evaluate Human Drivers of Sustainability to inform the design process.
•understand how to manage the complexity of the Human Drivers of Sustainability to support decision making.
•grow a sustainability mindset which includes the following: Preparing others
for the future, Engaging in Radical Collaboration, Using SDGs as a framework, Bias to Action and Practicing Sustainability as a verb and not a noun.
