OVERVIEW

In short, students in this module will be provided with the toolkit, skillset, and the mindset to create a better tomorrow.

The module introduces students to the concept of Social Entrepreneurship, a rapidly growing sector that is focused on the development and implementation of solutions that address social and environmental issues. The overall aims of this module are to help students understand the characteristics that define a social enterprise; identify problem areas and contexts within which social enterprises are launched; develop ideas for potential social ventures; consider how to evaluate the impact of social enterprises, and to be able to investigate how their own specific interests and existing discipline-specific knowledge can be applied in this sector.

Days in this module are varied; they often include conversations with guest social entrepreneurs, hands-on activities and immersive challenges, and class discussions. Throughout the module, students will develop a variety of skills (e.g. creativity, communication, problem-solving, teamwork) that are increasingly sought by employers.

A NOTE ON ASSESSMENT:

Please note that assessment for this module largely takes place during class time / during the week of the module - with the exception of a small amount of pre-work, and the individual reflective report which is typically due within two weeks of the module finishing.

Our teaching is grounded in academic rigour. Our focus is on ‘learning by doing’ in a real-world context. Classes include a combination of individual and team tasks and activities, along with discussions, presentations and reflection.

Enrolment on an Innovation Academy module means a commitment to active participation and engagement, which necessitates attendance at all scheduled classes.
