HUM40050 Arts and Events Programming

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module proposes to ask a set of philosophical and practical questions for students curious about a career in arts and event programming.

Led by Jennifer Jennings (THISISPOPBABY/Creative Futures Academy Artistic-Director-in-Residence), the module also offers supportive and structured opportunities for students to develop their own distinctive approach towards programming, exploring a variety of contexts such as arts festivals, cultural venue seasons, music festivals, event series and club nights.

With guest lectures and panels from top Irish and international programmers speaking about their preoccupations and approaches, the module aims to create a creative, entrepreneurial and ethical framework for the arts and events programmers of the future.

This Creative Futures Academy module is open to Masters and PhD students across the College of Arts and Humanities.

Learning Outcomes:

On completing this module, students will:

1. Have built an understanding of the arts and events programming eco-system in Ireland.
2. Be able to identify and hone specific skills, competencies and essential knowledge associated with arts and events programming.
3. Have developed an individual programming point of view with a strong theoretical and real-world underpinning.
4. Have devised and presented an arts or events programme proposal that reflects that point of view within a collaborative group environment.
5. Be equipped with contacts and avenues to begin or continue a career in arts and events programming.
