This module explores responsible management, sustainability, and the relationship between business, government, and society. It examines how societal issues are shaped by corporate and governmental actions. Students are introduced to key theories from ethics, morality, and law, along with real-world cases to help them develop their ethical compass and make responsible decisions. Topics include climate change, diversity, and working conditions. Through debate, critical analysis, and reflection, students will engage with the tensions between individual, organizational, and societal outcomes while fostering a socially embedded, entrepreneurial mindset.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
• Describe and understand contemporary approaches to responsible management and sustainability.
• Understand the key trends that impact the relationship between business and society.
• Display critical thinking skills in written and oral presentations, and construct an argument based on your knowledge and readings.
• Apply various theoretical approaches to morality, ethics and the law within a business context.
• Work in a collaborative team process to produce high-quality work.

• Should firms be responsible and sustainable if it negatively impacts the bottom line?
• What role should the state play in regulating businesses and ensuring firms are more sustainable?
• What labour standards should western companies adhere to when manufacturing in developing countries?

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module adopts student-centered approaches, with the lecturer acting as a facilitator who supports students in constructing knowledge through curated materials. Students are encouraged to develop their own values, ethical compasses, and critical perspectives.

Each session typically includes a combination of content delivery, discussions, group work, and individual reflections.
