To operate effectively within the world today, no matter what the organisation, an understanding of people and people management is one of the most important, if not the most important, resources at an organisation’s disposal. This is the discipline of human resource management (HRM).

HRM has witnessed a great deal of transformation and faced many challenges over the past five decades and while techniques and styles may have changed and evolved during that time, the notion of achieving organisational goals through people has remained the same.

The reality, however, is that there is no single best way to manage employees and the path chosen will depend on many variables that may change over time. This course seeks to examine the tensions and ambiguities commonly associated with HRM by reviewing the theory and practice of HRM today, and to understand the role of the HR function and line managers to deliver sustainable organisation capability and innovation through its people.

By providing you with a thorough theoretical grounding in the field of HRM and through the critical analysis of best-practice tools and techniques to source, develop and retain employees, my goal is to guide you in your journey to becoming successful people managers.
