HNUT40280 Nutritional Physiology

This module is for students taking the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or MSc in Food, Nutrition and Health.
This module seeks to provide students with an introduction to the fundamental understanding of physiology of the human body systems with a special emphasis on food digestion. This module will provide the prior knowledge required as the basis for the later study of the control and integration of body systems and disease.

Learning Outcomes:

● Recall the structure and properties of body tissues and organs.
● Relate the structure and function of each of the body systems.
● Describe how food is digested and absorbed.
● Outline the role of each of the body systems studied in the maintenance of homeostasis

Indicative Module Content:

The module will cover: core concepts in physiology including homeostasis, the upper and lower gastrointestinal system, urinary system, endocrine system, nervous system, immune system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, and muscular system.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module will be delivered entirely online.
Lectures will be recorded and uploaded weekly and live tutorials will be held online every week throughout the trimester. The assessments will require peer and group work and reflective learning in addition to critical writing, student presentations, and enquiry based learning.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

AT1 Team Based Learning will provide in-class immediate feedback to students in groups on their understanding of core knowledge and during the test process peer review activities will occur. AT2 Group Project will provide peer review activities as students prepare a group project. They will receive feedback on a draft prior to summative assessment and students will self-assess their final product. Post-assessment each student will receive the group's feedback as well as a class-level feedback on group performance. AT3 will provide peer review prior to submission and through group discussion boards. Students will self-assess their final submitted work and receive feedback post-assessment on individual performance and class-level feedback.
