HIS20670 The French Revolution

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module will begin by examining the intellectual, cultural, social and political origins of the revolution. The core of the module will be a narrative of the revolution from 1789 to the fall of Robespierre and the end of the Terror. In the course of the narrative, the revolution's varied contributions to the development of modern political culture will be discussed, from liberalism through revolutionary war and nationalism to political violence and the Utopian reign of Virtue. Seminars will be constructed around readings of contemporary documents and secondary literature.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module, students will have familiarised themselves with the personalities and events of perhaps the most seminal periods in modern history and will be able to navigate the controversies it has spawned. They will have acquired a foundation on which to base their further study of modern Europe in particular. Finally, students will have practised analysing and discussing primary documents.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module combines large-group and small-group teaching, through a weekly lecture and seminar. The lectures provide an introduction to the topic. Autonomous learning is fostered through assigned weekly readings. The seminars encourage active learning and critical reflection through a combination of class discussion and group work.
