For M.Sc. In Humanitarian Action a thesis can be defined as a report on research carried out by a student on an agreed issue and to an agreed format.
a) It is a piece of individual research
b) The issues/ topic/ problem combines to frame a defined research question. This study question is then developed either into specific research questions of an overall objective and associated clearly stated SMART (specific) objectives.
c) There is some flexibility in the format of the thesis, an agreed format for a minor thesis. The standard format should be adhered to unless otherwise agreed with the supervisor and,
d) Given the limited resources, mainly in terms of the allotted time, the end product should be a report of approximately 30 000 words.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The student is expected to present his/ her research proposal on Brightspace before the 30th April in year one. The programme coordinator will monitor the submission of proposals and assign an appropriate supervisor based on the research topic/ issue.

The Supervisor is expected to assist at 2 stages in the process:
a. During the development of the proposal; and
b. To review the work in progress.

To this end, it is envisaged that the supervisor will be required to meet/ interact with the student twice in developing the proposal. The date for this meeting should be mutually agreed upon after a request from the student and depending upon the availability of the supervisor. It is up to the supervisor and the student to mutually decide on the mode of the meeting (in-person, via zoom, telephone etc.)
