This module studies Book 1 of Herodotus’ Histories, to be read in ancient Greek. This is one of Herodotus’ most dramatic and thought-provoking books, rich in speech and clear narrative. Classes will be devoted to reading the text and discussing points of interest. Students are expected to prepare a section of the text for each class, and to be able to translate, interpret, and discuss it.

In autumn 25-26 trimester this module will be delivered by Dr. Evelien Bracke.

The prescribed edition is the following: Dewald, C., Munson, R.V. (eds., trs.) 2022. Herodotus Histories: Book 1. Cambridge University Press.

Please make sure you always bring your copy of the relevant text to lectures.

There are a number of good translations. Though you should not rely on this for your own translation, I would recommend the following: Holland, T. (tr.) 2015. Herodotus: The Histories. London: Penguin Classics.

To take this module, students are expected to have completed GRK10090 Greek Language I, GRk10100 Greek Language II and GRK20140 Intermediate Greek, or their equivalent.
