Curricular information is subject to change.

This module is the third stage of an introduction to the ancient Greek language. Students will finish meeting the necessary grammar for translating ancient Greek and begin to tackle passages of unadapted Greek, particularly from Plato, Homer and Herodotus. Students are expected to have taken GRK10090 Greek Language I and GRK10100 Greek Language II, or equivalent. The textbooks are the same as for Greek Language I and II, i.e. Reading Greek, 2nd edition (2 vols; Cambridge University Press). Any additional passages will be taken from A Greek Anthology (Cambridge University Press) and will be made available through scans. Students will be expected to prepare a portion of the text for each class and be able to translate and discuss it. They will also be introduced to the grammar for each section, and do exercises on it.

The two volumes of Reading Greek (Cambridge University Press) are essential for this module. These are available online through UCD Library.
Any passages used from A Greek Anthology will be provided by the lecturer in class.

There are three classes per week throughout the Autumn Trimester. In the first portion of the module students will revise and complete Reading Greek, starting from Section 13D. Once the new grammar is completed they will read passages from Plato, Herodotus, and Homer in sections 18-20. Any unseen passages will be taken from the JACT anthology. Students are expected to come to class having revised key grammar lessons and vocabulary, and be prepared to translate and comment on any set texts assigned.
