This module is the third stage of an introduction to the ancient Greek language. Students are expected to have taken GRK10090 Greek Language I and GRK10100 Greek Language II, or equivalent. The textbooks are Reading Greek, 2nd edition (2 vols) and A Greek Anthology (both published by Cambridge University Press). The module will complete and revise Reading Greek, starting from section 16, and then move on to reading selected passages from the anthology. Students will be expected to prepare a portion of the text for each class and be able to translate and discuss it. They will also be introduced to the grammar for each section, and do exercises on it.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to - Translate passages of prepared text with confidence and accuracy - - Manage a Greek vocabulary - Identify and analyse declensions of all nouns and adjectives - Conjugate all tenses of regular and irregular verbs - Solve complex grammatical exercises.

Indicative Module Content:

There will be three classes per week, which will progress through Reading Greek, starting from section 16, before moving on to reading selected passages from the anthology. Students will be expected to prepare passages for translation, revise grammar, and do exercises from the textbook as homework.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module is delivered in small classes, typically of 2-3 students. In the first portion of the module students will revise and complete Reading Greek, starting from section 16. Once the new grammar is completed they will read passages from Plato, Herodotus, and Homer in sections 18-20 before moving on to unadapted Greek texts selected from the JACT anthology. Students are expected to come to class having revised key grammar lessons and vocabulary, and be prepared to translate and comment on any set texts assigned.

Students are expected to have passed GRK10090 Greek Language I and GRK10100 Greek Language II, or equivalent.
