On completion of this module students should be able to:
* manage a basic Greek vocabulary;
* identify and analyse declensions of regular nouns and adjectives;
* conjugate the present, future, imperfect and aorist tenses of regular verbs;
* translate simple passages of adapted Greek, both prepared and unprepared;
* solve grammatical transformation exercises.
This module is the first stage of an introduction to ancient Greek which is designed for complete beginners. The textbook is Reading Greek (2nd edition, 2 vols., Cambridge University Press). Students read adapted Greek from the start, as well as doing language exercises. The module will cover sections 1-6 of the textbook. The module also provides an introduction to ancient Greek culture, especially 5th- and 4th-century Athens.

This module is intended for complete beginners, and should not be taken by students who have studied ancient Greek for more than one semester or equivalent. Students who are not complete beginners should contact the module co-ordinator before registering.
