This module introduces students to some basic concepts of translation studies. Through practical translation and through the critical analysis of existing translations, students will gain an insight into translation both as linguistic and cultural transfer.
Throughout the module a particular focus will be placed on the critical reflection on the process and product of translation.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Identify and explain on a basic level some key terms of translation, such as “translatability”, “equivalence”, and ”degree of differentiation”
Demonstrate an increased awareness of some of the central linguistic and cultural issues of translation between German and English
Apply understanding of particular differences between English and German grammatical constructions when producing translations of sentences or short texts (
Identify and discuss different translation solutions in different text types
Reflect on the process and product of translation

Indicative Module Content:

Basic concepts of translation theory such as equivalence, translatability, cultural transposition, degree of cultural differentiation
Differences between English and German grammatical constructions that are relevant when translating between the two languages, such as time phrases, adverbs, pronouns
Translation of cultural specific terms
Reflection on own translation solutions
Analysis of existing translations

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Class activities include among other activities:
- introductory lectures on some basic concepts of translation theory as well as on selected examples of particular differences between English and German grammatical constructions that are relevant to translation between the two languages
- active, task-based learning: Individual and collaborative practical translation exercises German-English – English German both in class and as homework/preparation
- discussion of translations solutions both in class and via discussion board entries and
- close analysis of existing English translations of short German texts.
