GER20240 German for Ex-Beginners A

This module is aimed at students who have successfully completed the German Beginners modules GER10100 and GER10110, or have reached the equivalent standard (CEFR level A2). This module offers an intensive and accelerated programme that integrates spoken and written production with the understanding of aural and written communication. Students who successfully complete this module with a grade of B and above are deemed to have reached ca. B1 level of the CEFR.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
• Correctly employ most basic and some more complex grammatical structures commonly used in informal and formal German discourse
• demonstrate an understanding of the key ideas conveyed in texts on a variety of familiar topics, with particular emphasis on their culturally-specific inflections (e.g. living as a student German-speaking countries, cities in German-speaking countries).
• produce coherent, grammatically correct written texts showing an ability to describe experiences and impressions and to express personal hopes and ambitions employing appropriate tenses and structures
• deliver in clear German a short, well-structured oral presentation on a prepared topic
• participate in conversations on familiar topics relating to personal information and interests

Indicative Module Content:

Students will consolidate the grammatical knowledge developed at Stage 1, with particular emphasis on the control of common regular and irregular verbs in all tenses. They will develop competence in the area of voice (Passiv, Konjunktiv II) and improve their control of complex sentence structure.
The main topic areas covered will be talking about the past (story telling, memories), and describing cities, places and different living situations, with a special focus on student living.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students will be taught in small groups with a focus on small group work and active learning (spoken and written production in class independently, in pairs and in small groups).

Students will develop their oral and written production skills by completing regular homework assignments and preparing short, structured presentations. In this, students will be expected to explore authentic target-language source materials which they have sourced themselves.

Students will be expected to maintain detailed vocabulary records and to regularly work on grammar independently,

Course materials will be drawn from a range of contemporary audio-visual and textual sources and supported by the use of a grammar book.

Contact hours will be conducted partly in the physical and partly in the virtual classroom and will be directed by the university timetable. Students who are unable to attend physical classes will be fully supported in their learning. All students are expected to engage fully with physical and/or online classes as scheduled in the timetable.

Start of module: Initial self-assessment against CEFR criteria. Throughout module: Individual feedback after two class tests (written and oral). In-class peer review: correcting short written exercises. Practice using online grammar exercises (self-correcting)
