This module is primarily for Commerce International Students of German but is also open as an elective for students of German planning to go on Erasmus to Germany or Austria or are interested in having a broader understanding of German-speaking countries. It focuses on the linguistic, historical and cultural context in which students will conduct their studies whilst on their year abroad.
Students will work with contemporary German-language materials in order to explore key ideas and concepts underpinning the economical and business discourse German-speaking countries. Furthermore, students will learn about some of the key aspects defining the current social, economical and political life in Germany and Austria to help them gain a deeper understanding of the countries in which they are going to spend their year abroad. Last but not least, students will understand the features and characteristics of the third-level institutions in which they will study.

Since the content will be taught in German, we strongly recommend that students who sign up for the module have at least the equivalent of the B1 level.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

• Be able to understand articles and audio-visual material relating to politics, society and economics
• Understand and be able to use appropriate German to talk about historical, societal, political and economical matters in Germany and Austria
• Understand and use, both orally and in writing, key vocabulary and linguistic structures particular to Business German
• Can understand and use appropriate German to navigate the university system in the mentioned countries
• An awareness of and sensitivity to another culture

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module requires the student to prepare assignments in order to use group-based activities during class.
By using videos and audios students will receive further input regarding the different topics and students are required to actively engage in discussions and present their opinion.
Furthermore, using the marketing mix, students will prepare a group presentation about a product they developed.
Students will also be required to conduct an interview about the year abroad in Germany or Austria.

The course is amber on UCD's AI traffic light system, which means you can use AI to research or help with pronunciation, but not to write your scripts. If you use it, you must say at the end which form of generative AI you used and which prompts you used.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

You can receive personal feedback from your tutor during office hours or by appointment. Written assessments will be corrected, with comments to enable further self-correction. Further feedback can always be given during office hours. In this module you will be asked to have a sales conversation in German. You will receive a written feedback sheet with a grade for the overall content of the conversation and group performance as well as an individual section and an individual grade.
