This is a generic module that encompasses a range of short workshops to meet the training needs of graduate students in agreement with their supervisor(s) in the School of Earth Sciences. These advanced level courses are generally offered by external institutions that can offer specialized facilities and equipment and/or by industry training centres.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Students will learn how to apply advanced level specialist techniques to the problems being addressed by their research project, as evidenced by results presented in seminars, annual reports and publications. The emphasis is on application of the specialised techniques that are relevant to the student's research.

Indicative Module Content:

Content is tailored according to the individual student's research needs. Typical examples would be training in specialist laboratory facilities overseas, industry software and datasets, specialist numerical methods and coding techniques that are not routinely available within the School.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The student must demonstrate that they can successfully apply the specialist knowledge gained within this Advanced Research Techniques module to the particular scientific problem(s) being tackled in their research project, under the guidance of their supervisor(s) and graduate studies panel. In the first instance, the supervisor(s), in collaboration with the post-graduate student identifies particular student- and project-specific training needs (e.g. in laboratory, field or computational methods) and suitable training courses are found, typically in external organisations (in academic institutions and in industry). The student is deemed to have passed the module is they can demonstrate to the satisfaction of their supervisor(s) that they have mastered the techniques, as evidenced by results produced using these techniques and presented at international conferences, in peer-reviewed publications and/or in industry reports.
