On completion of the module, students should be able to:
1) Plan and safely execute field data collection projects.
2) Work both independently and as part of an effective team in the field.
3) Collect high integrity field data and keep a comprehensive field notebook.
4) Make geological maps in areas of complex structure.
5) Analyse areas of complex structure.
6) Integrate field and derivative datasets.
7) Place field observations in a wider geological context.
Mapping is usually conduced in three field areas over one, two or three days for each area, with different geological aspects in each area. The primary deliverable from the students are a map and cross-section of each area, we well as the supporting field notebook.

Students must have a Stage 3 Geology GPA of at least 2.48 in order to enroll to this module.

• Feedback individually to students, on an activity or draft prior to summative assessment
Students map independently but members of staff are circulating around the field areas and discussing progress and technical issues with the students regularly on the rocks. Evening sessions are for consolidating work and usually involve feedback on progress on both a group and individual basis. Half-way through the mapping, a more formal discussion with each student individually provides advice and feedback on the maps submitted to date.
