This module provides students registered to the MSc Risk, Resilience and Sustainability with the opportunity to undertake a short duration internship with an external organisation during Trimester 2.

Students interested in undertaking this module should contact the module coordinator in the first part of Trimester 1.

Registration to this module will require a suitable placement and hosting organisation to be sourced by 1 December of the academic year (i.e. in advance of Trimester 2)

The duration and specific activities to be conducted during the internship will be discussed and agreed between the student, module coordinator and hosting organisation.

The core aims of the internship are:

i. to promote independent learning;
ii. provide practical learning (e.g. field and laboratory work experience) beyond that offered in the taught modules in the programme;
iii. enable students to apply knowledge acquired in the taught programme to a variety of work environments;
iv. allow students to develop organisational and communication skills;
v. offer students potential to complement and support activities planned for the MSc Thesis Project.

Learning Outcomes:


- Student will develop practical skills and competencies for a specific occupation or profession

- Students will explore career options and gain general work experience in an organisation (e.g. state agency, NGO, private sector) that aligns with content of the MSc in Risk, Resilience and Sustainability

- Students will be able to articulate how their internship experience contributes towards their overall learning and has supported their career goals

- Students will gain self-confidence and interpersonal skills

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This learning in this module will be based upon active/task based activities that will be undertaken while on the internship placement. During the internship the student will maintain a diary of their activities and insights gained. Upon completion of the module students will submit a reflective account of their learning experience and critically-appraise their experience within the context of broader understandings (theoretical, conceptual and practical) in the relevant field of study.
