GEOG30910 Research in Action

Academic Year 2022/2023

The ability to develop and execute successfully a research project is a core skill. This module provides an opportunity for suitably qualified students to engage in an independent, tailored project working closely with a member of faculty on a given research topic. Success in this module will require a high level of personal motivation, a strong commitment to working independently on the research topic, individual adaptability and perseverance, as well as a desire to communicate your results to a range of audiences.

Requirements are as follows:
1) Successfully completed the pre-requisite module SSCI30050 Social Sciences Digital Research Skills;
2) Hold a GPA of 2:1 in previous academic year or in a module closely related to their research topic (in exceptional circumstances, engaged and passionate students with an excellent proposal and a GPA of 2.2 may also be considered);
3) Submitted a proposal (see proposal template below);
4) Registered to 10 credits for Spring semester offerings in case should it not possible to accommodate them in GEOG30910 Research in Action module.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the module, students will be able to:

• Engage actively in research;
• Design a research project;
• Understand the role of theory in human and/or physical geography research;
• Conduct out a piece of research;
• Make ethical decisions in their research practice;
• Present and communicate research results in an appropriate form;
• Recognise the key features of high-quality research in the social sciences;
• Identify how their research skills can be applied/are relevant in the workplace and other settings outside of the academy.

Indicative Module Content:

The module will be entire based on a piece of research work. Students will work closely with a faculty member to explore and analyse a jointly agreed research topic.
