This module introduces students to the expanding field of professionals leading urban climate adaptation and mitigation efforts. With a significant portion of the world's population living in urban areas and accounting for approximately 75% of greenhouse gas emissions, urban residents are highly vulnerable to climate change but also offer important solutions for a more equitable carbon transition.

In this module, we will explore how cities are addressing this critical challenge. Students will engage with professionals working on climate adaptation and mitigation strategies in cities across multiple continents and learn about the primary thematic areas where cities focus their efforts.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

• Successful students will gain an understanding of the IPCC’s prioritized actions for urban policymakers and the climate risks and resilience potentials for cities.
• Students should be able to recognize the shortcomings of climate action plans, strategies for overcoming implementation challenges, and the co-benefits when adaptation, mitigation, and social justice strategies are addressed simultaneously.
• By the end of the module, students will have a strong sense of the primary areas of climate adaptation and mitigation action for cities, supported by applied case studies from multiple cities.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be a blend of in-person lectures, small group activities, and independent reading and critical reflections. Students will prepare two assignments to review mitigation, adaptation and equity-informed responses to reduce climate risks and promote climate resilience in specific cities.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Recommendations:

GEOG 10020 or an equivalent module such as PEP 10030 is strongly recommended.
