This module covers advanced aspects of the genetic control of behaviour in selected organisms. Topics will include a discussion of the chromosomal determination of gender from micro-organisms to man. The evolution of sex-determining genes, and sex chromosomes, will be explored. Aspects of the regulation of sexual behaviour will be discussed. Likely mechanisms of gene-environment interaction in control of behavioural traits (such as aggression and nurturing) will be examined. Content will be delivered face-to-face where possible and online where necessary. It is recommended that students have taken GENE30030 Genetic Basis of Disease, or modules with similar learning outcomes, and that the module is taken together with GENE40050 Human Genetics and Disease.
