GDIC3032K Plant Biology Exper&Practice

Academic Year 2023/2024

Plant Biology Experiment is designed for Stage 2 Students who are undertaking dual undergraduate degree programmes at Guangzhou-Dublin International College. Experiment for Plant Biology is the basic lab course for students majoring in life sciences. The module aims to support students to investigate the characteristics of cells and tissues, morphology of vegetative and reproductive organs, as well as diversity and groups of plant species. Students will learn basic experimental techniques through lab work. They will know how to identify, survey and compare characteristics of morphologies and structures for different parts of plants.

Practical training in the herbarium, university campus and arboretum will be organized in this module. Students will investigate the plant species with the aspects of anatomy, morphology, cytology and taxonomy, et al., through the lab work or field trips.

In this module, they will learn how to make a sustainable use of germplasm resources of plants. The principles and findings of experiment and practical of plant biology will provide the base for such applied sciences as horticulture, agriculture, and forestry, etc.

Classes are taught in small groups. In addition to consolidating theoretical knowledge and developing experimental skills, outstanding scientific videos will be shown in classroom activities and group discussions will be organized. Students will often be expected to do team work in class. Materials and assessments for the module are designed with reference to the teaching plan for Life Sciences.
