GDIC3030K Horticultural Plant Biotechnol

Academic Year 2023/2024

Biotechnology in Horticultural Plants is designed for Stage 6 Students who are undertaking dual undergraduate degree programmes at Guangzhou-Dublin International College. The module specifically aims to introduce the principles and methods of biotechnology application in horticultural plants to students of horticulture on their degree programmes. Students will learn the concept and principles of basic biotechnology methods in horticultural plants. They will learn recent progress in biotechnology, cell engineering principle, plant tissue culture, virus-free seedlings, principle and application of molecular marker technology, and plant genetic transformation.

Classes are taught in small groups. Except for understanding the basic principles, classroom exchange will be performed to develop students’ ability to elucidate biotechnology methods in horticultural plants. In addition, experimental courses such as plant tissue culture (medium preparation, sterile methods, in vitro propagation), DNA extraction, agarose gel electrophoresis, PCR, and DNA recombinant technology are offered to help students to master knowledge about biotechnology in horticultural plants.
