Experiment for Biotechnology in Horticultural Plants is designed for Stage 3 Students who are undertaking dual undergraduate degree programmes at Guangzhou-Dublin International College. The module is attached to principles of biotechnology in Horticultural Plants and specifically aims to strengthen students’ understandings of the principles and methods of biotechnology application in horticultural plant. Students can develop various skills such as plant tissue culture (medium preparation, sterile methods, in vitro propagation), DNA extraction, agarose gel electrophoresis, and PCR technology. Students can know how to use pressure vapour sterilizer, pipette, clean bench, centrifuge, PCR instrument, electrophoresis system and other equipments during lab operations. Activities conducted in lab will support the development of students’ academic study competences.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

• Know how to use pressure vapour sterilizer, pipette, clean bench, centrifuge, PCR instrument, electrophoresis system and other equipments.
• Master the operation skills of plant tissue culture and in vitro propagation.
• Master the technique of DNA extraction, PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis.
• Know how to use molecular marker technology to distinguish horticultural plants.
• Understand the strategies for improvement of horticultural plants through genetic transformation.
