GDIC3012K Horticultural Crop Breeding (Experiments & Practice)

Principles of Horticultural Crop Breeding is designed for Stage 3 Students who are undertaking dual undergraduate degree programmes at Guangzhou-Dublin International College. The module specifically aims to introduce the principles and methods of horticultural plants breeding to the students of horticulture on their degree programmes. Students will learn the concept and principles of horticultural plants breeding. They will learn the conventional and non-conventional breeding methods, including introduction, selection, hybridization, mutation, and ploidy breeding. They learn the reasons of variety degeneration, how to prevent it, and strategies for variety propagation.

Classes are taught in small groups. In addition to learn the principles, classroom activities will support the development of students’ ability to apply the methods for horticultural plants breeding according to specific breeding objectives. In addition, experimental and practical courses also improve the skills of the students how to apply conventional and non-conventional breeding methods for the enhancement of horticultural plants and the influence of industry needs and consumer preferences.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

• describe the concepts and principles of breeding, formulate breeding objective according to specific horticultural plants.
• rationally utilize the germplasm resource, preventive measures for conservation and evaluation.
• interpret how plant breeding, advantages and disadvantages of introduction, selection, hybridization, mutation, ploidy breeding and their application according to specific short-term and long-term goals.
• apply traditional and non-conventional breeding methods for the enhancement of horticultural plants.
• design and present strategies for variety propagation for asexual and sexual horticultural plants.
